GURPS Midnight
- System: GURPS
- Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy
About this game
I've always liked the Midnight setting but thought it was really poorly suited to D20. Because of that, I've come up with a GURPS version that I've used a couple of times, published to my blog, etc., that works well and fits more with the gritty feel of the Midnight setting. I had a few requests from players who wanted to learn GURPS, so we started. The game is underway at my house - we've finished Act 1 of the three Acts I'm hoping for.
Premise
In general, the premise of the Midnight setting is - take your usual Tolkienesque fantasy setting, but have the Big Bad Dark God win the Great Battle. Now it's 100 years later, and there is only one god - the Dark Lord Izrador. Weapons, magic and even literacy are outlawed. Humans and Halflings are enslaved and Elves and Dwarves are kill-on-sight in most places. Orcs and worse things run your life, and you live in the ruins of the cities, towns and homes your ancestors built before the Shadow took over everything.
In the midst of this, you are a hero. You fight what seems like it must be a losing battle in a world where there are no benevolent gods to hear your prayers, and everything you do to fight against the Shadow brings more trouble down on your head.
Style of play
Whether I try or not, my games always have a strong sandbox element and also always involve humor from both me and the players. I always run systems with a few house rule tweaks because I believe strongly that the system should reflect the setting and the kind of story the group is going for. What I enjoy most about running a game is the dramatic moment when a player has really bought into the story and the setting and their own character, and the time come when they are able to kick serious ass and look awesome. I am not an antagonistic GM and I don't have much patience for that kind of play myself - on the other hand, a good story comes from beating up on the characters mercilessly. My goal is to have the characters suffering and barely scraping through exciting challenges while the players are always having fun.
